
The foundation of the village is lost in the past, but it is know that Gela is establshed by Thracians and it is one of the oldest settlement in Rodophe mountain.
There is two legends conected to the history of that place and village. The firs one is that here is the birth place of the anciant mythical singer Orpheus. Also that he go to search his lover down in the nearlest cave "Dqwolskoto Gyrlo". The second one is that here is the tomb of the famoust Bulgarian exarch Stefan
Near the village can be found archeological remains from the Thracian period as well as remains from a Roman road. There were found a lot of funeral marks of over 20 Thracians. According to the archeologists it was a ritual funeral of an eminent Thracian leader.
There were found and ceramic vessels in the graves. A lot of ornaments, kehlibal objects are proving for cultural connections of the ancient population with distant nations. Also of interest is the church “Holy Trinity”, built on top of a Christian monastery from the Early Bulgarian Kingdom.
